Garland, Monarch Melee
Garland, Royal Kidnapper Commander Deck
Garland is a Dimir theft deck. It deliberately hands opponents the monarchy so Garland can steal their creatures, and those stolen creatures get +2/+2 and can't be sacrificed while the opponent stays monarch. Around this, the deck takes control of opponents' permanents in every way it can: auras and spells that steal, reanimation from any graveyard, exchanges and flicker tricks that turn temporary theft into permanent ownership. It also runs card-advantage creatures that copy or cast opponents' cards, and it protects the board with counterspells and selective removal. How it wins: The deck beats down with an army of buffed, stolen creatures and the opponents' own reanimated threats, while monarch-punishing drain, Starscream life loss and overwhelming card advantage grind the table out. Key roles: - Monarch manipulation: Garland's enter trigger makes an opponent the monarch, and other cards pass or take the crown. Each time an opponent becomes monarch, Garland steals another creature, and the deck can reclaim the monarchy to drain and draw. (Garland, Royal Kidnapper, Starscream, Power Hungry // Starscream, Seeker Leader, Court of Ambition) - Creature theft: Direct control-changing effects take opponents' best creatures and permanents. Stealing enough permanents turns on bonus card draw, and Garland's static ability makes every stolen body bigger and immune to sacrifice. (Agent of Treachery, Treachery, Tempted by the Oriq) - Flicker and blink: Flicker effects re-trigger enter abilities like Garland's monarch gift or Agent's theft. Cards that blink a permanent back under its owner's control reset Garland or return a creature after a swap. (Displacer Kitten, Ghostly Flicker, Essence Flux) - Graveyard theft and mass sacrifice: Reanimation from any graveyard, plus sweepers and edicts that refill opponents' graveyards with targets. Stolen creatures can't be sacrificed under Garland, so mass-sacrifice effects hit only the opponents' own creatures. (Breach the Multiverse, Meathook Massacre II, Blasphemous Edict) - Playing opponents' cards: Evasive creatures and engines exile cards from opponents' libraries or graveyards and let the deck cast them, adding more stolen value. (Thief of Sanity, Gonti, Lord of Luxury, Rogue Class) - Control shell: Cheap counterspells, symmetrical-draw punishers and fast mana protect the theft engine and keep opponents from undoing the stolen board. (Consecrated Sphinx, Counterspell, Disallow)
