The deck turns lifegain into +1/+1 counters and the counters into direct damage. A large suite of lifegain-matters creatures and auras grow whenever life is gained, and Shalai and Hallar deals damage to an opponent equal to every batch of counters placed on any creature its controller controls. Granting Shalai and Hallar lifelink closes the loop: its own damage gains life, life places counters, and counters make it deal damage again. How it wins: It burns opponents out through Shalai and Hallar's counter triggers, either incrementally across many lifegain events or in one lethal self-sustaining loop once Shalai and Hallar has lifelink alongside a counters-on-lifegain effect. Key roles: - Infinite lifelink loop: With Shalai and Hallar carrying lifelink, these effects turn each damage trigger into lifegain and back into counters, repeating without limit for infinite damage, life and counters. (Light of Promise, Heroic Feast) - Lifelink granting: Auras, tricks and pairings hand out lifelink, ideally to Shalai and Hallar to start the loop, or to attackers so that combat damage feeds the lifegain engine. (Rune of Sustenance, Lifelink, Nearheath Pilgrim) - Lifegain counter creatures: A broad roster of cheap creatures puts counters on themselves whenever life is gained, so a single lifegain event becomes several Shalai and Hallar triggers at once. Some also pay out cards or scale up into large threats. (Ajani's Pridemate, Exemplar of Light, Titanbones, Towering Heart) - Incidental lifegain sources: Repeatable and one-shot life gains keep the counter creatures ticking even without combat. (Prosperous Innkeeper, Revitalize, Qala, Ajani's Pridemate) - Counter-placing interaction: Cheap instants and sorceries put +1/+1 counters directly for an immediate damage trigger, often bundled with fight removal or protection. Counter-producing lands add further repeatable triggers. (Dromoka's Command, Snakeskin Veil, Vigorbloom Charm) - Commander protection: Protection-color, hexproof and indestructible tricks keep Shalai and Hallar alive, since it converts every counter into damage and anchors the combos. (Gods Willing, Collective Resistance, Plaza of Heroes)
