Phenax, God of Deception
Phenax, God of Deception Commander Deck
Phenax turns every creature into a mill engine: each can tap to make a target player mill cards equal to its toughness. That pushes the deck toward high-toughness walls and defenders like Charix, Caelorna and Tree of Perdition, which become repeatable mill rays. Around that core sit spell-based mill bursts, triggers that mill on draws, casts, untaps and landfall, and graveyard-scaling threats, all protected by counterspells, removal and attack deterrents until every opponent's library is empty. How it wins: Opponents lose by decking, either from repeated Phenax taps plus big mill spells and stacked triggers, or by assembling Phenax with Consuming Aberration, whose toughness grows as it mills, alongside Maddening Cacophony for a near-infinite mill loop. Key roles: - High-toughness mill rays: Under Phenax, big-butt creatures each mill a large chunk every turn. Untap effects let them fire again on other turns, and graveyard-scaling bodies grow into even bigger rays as libraries empty. (Charix, the Raging Isle, Tree of Perdition, Consuming Aberration) - Burst mill spells: Large one-shot mills and exile effects strip big portions of libraries at once and feed the scaling creatures. (Maddening Cacophony, Fractured Sanity, Tasha's Hideous Laughter) - Mill trigger engines: Permanents mill opponents passively whenever cards are drawn, spells are cast, permanents untap or lands enter. The Water Crystal adds four to every mill event, which supercharges every other source. (The Water Crystal, Psychic Corrosion, Mesmeric Orb) - Untap and lock tricks: Untap effects let Phenax-granted tap abilities fire twice per turn cycle. Intruder Alarm and Wall of Frost restrict opposing creatures, and Mesmeric Orb punishes every untap. (Unstoppable Plan, Intruder Alarm, Mesmeric Orb) - Draw-to-mill and wheel package: Card draw both refuels the deck and triggers draw-based mill. Wheels empty hands into graveyards and set up Dreamborn Muse, while Notion Thief steals the extra draws. (Sphinx's Tutelage, Jace's Archivist, Notion Thief) - Control and defense: Counterspells, spot removal, bounce and attack taxes keep the slow mill plan alive. Graveyard-size payoffs like Drown in the Loch and Cruel Calculations get stronger as the plan advances. (Propaganda, Drown in the Loch, Cyclonic Rift) - The
