Mortarion, Daemon Primarch
Mortarion, Daemon Primarch Commander Deck
Mono-black life-as-a-resource aristocrats deck built around Mortarion: it deliberately pays life all turn through draw spells, phyrexian mana, fetch-style costs, Bolas's Citadel and K'rrik, so that at end step Mortarion converts that lost life into an army of 2/2 menace Astartes Warrior tokens. Those tokens are fodder for sacrifice outlets feeding drain triggers, card draw and mana, while lifegain from drains and lifelink refills the life total to spend again. Heavy Swamp-based mana (Cabal Coffers, Crypt Ghast, Nykthos, rituals) powers big X payments for Mortarion and Exsanguinate. How it wins: It drains opponents out through repeated death triggers, token and ETB life-loss effects and lifegain-to-damage loops, finished by Gray Merchant, Exsanguinate or a Sanguine Bond/Vito chain amplified by Bloodletter of Aclazotz. Key roles: - Life payment fuel: Repeatable ways to lose life on purpose raise the cap on Mortarion's end-step X while drawing cards or casting spells (Bolas's Citadel, Greed, K'rrik, Son of Yawgmoth). - Swamp mana engine: Swamp-doubling and devotion lands produce the huge black mana needed to pay a large X for Mortarion and for X drains (Cabal Coffers, Crypt Ghast, Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx). - Sacrifice and death payoffs: Free sac outlets turn the Astartes tokens into mana, Treasure and cards, while death-trigger creatures and enchantments drain each opponent per body (Ashnod's Altar, Zulaport Cutthroat, Tallyman of Nurgle). - Token and Warrior entry drains: Creating and losing tokens drains on both ends, and the Astartes Warriors trigger Warrior and black-creature ETB payoffs, doubled by a Roaming Throne naming the right type (Mirkwood Bats, Thrasher Brute, Ayara, First of Locthwain). - Lifegain-to-drain loop: Lifelink and drain lifegain refill life to pay again, and gain-to-loss enchantments turn every gain into more damage, doubled during the turn by Bloodletter (Sanguine Bond, Vito, Thorn of the Dusk Rose, Whip of Erebos). - Big drain finishers and safety: Devotion and X-spell burst finishes, with The Golden Throne letting the deck push life payments to the brink without dying (Gray Merchant of Asphodel, Exsanguinate, The Golden Throne).
