Howling Nights
Tovolar, Dire Overlord // Tovolar, the Midnight Scourge Commander Deck
Tribal Werewolf and Wolf aggro built around Tovolar, who draws a card whenever any Wolf or Werewolf deals combat damage to a player. With three or more of them in play, his upkeep trigger forces night and flips every daybound Werewolf to its stronger nightbound side at once. A creature-heavy list that rarely casts two spells a turn keeps night in place, backed by night-making spells and a day/night toggle. The plan is to go wide with hasty, evasive, pumped-up pack members, turn combat damage into a steady stream of cards, and sink spare mana into Tovolar's night-side ({X}{R}{G} for +X and trample). How it wins: It swarms opponents with transformed Werewolves and Wolf tokens, grows them with anthems, counters and power boosts, and gives them trample, menace or unblockability until combat damage finishes the table. Key roles: - Forcing and holding night: Tovolar's upkeep trigger, Werewolves that flip together, direct night-making spells and a day/night toggle keep the nightbound sides active, and a lean spell count helps. One lord also locks flipped Werewolves on their night side. This keeps the lords, hexproof granter and Tovolar's pump available more often. (Unnatural Moonrise, The Celestus, Immerwolf) - Pack building and tokens: These cards turn single creatures, lands or upkeeps into several Wolves. That quickly meets the three-creature threshold and feeds wide attacks. (Tovolar's Huntmaster // Tovolar's Packleader, Hollowhenge Overlord, Mayor of Avabruck // Howlpack Alpha) - Anthems and growth: Night-side lords, team-wide counters and power boosts turn a wide board into a lethal one. (Kessig Naturalist // Lord of the Ulvenwald, Avabruck Caretaker // Hollowhenge Huntmaster, Nightpack Ambusher) - Connecting in combat: Haste, team-wide trample, menace, can't-block effects and unblockability make sure Wolves reach players and trigger Tovolar's card draw. (Garruk's Uprising, Village Watch // Village Reavers, Rogue's Passage) - Card flow and creature cheating: Beyond Tovolar's draw, these cards draw off big creatures entering, combat damage or board width. They also dig up creatures and put them into play for free, which keeps the curve going after removal. (Garruk's Packleader, Howlpack Piper // Wildsong Howler, Natural Order) - Reach and interaction: Pingers, fight effects, damage redirection, burn and sweepers that the bigger nightbound bodies survive clear blockers and add direct damage. (Ill-Tempered Loner // Howlpack Avenger, Volatile Arsonist // Dire-Strain Anarchist, Fiery Confluence)
