Abzan lifegain-and-counters midrange built around Betor, Ancestor's Voice, whose end-step trigger turns each turn's life swings into value. Life gained becomes +1/+1 counters on one other creature, and life lost becomes reanimation of a creature card of that mana value or less. The deck stacks small, repeatable lifegain (soul-warden effects, lifelink, doublers) with counter multipliers to grow one big threat. Self-inflicted life loss (painlands, talismans, card-draw enchantments, Phyrexian-mana and life-cost spells) doubles as fuel for Betor's recursion half. How it wins: Massive counter-boosted lifelinking or trampling creatures swing through hexproof-protected boards, while lifegain-to-drain engines and X-drain spells finish opponents off. Key roles: - Incremental lifegain: Cheap creatures and enchantments gain life whenever creatures enter, attack or deal damage, and doublers inflate those amounts, setting up Betor's counter trigger every turn (Soul Warden, Essence Warden, Rhox Faithmender) - Counter amplification: Effects that double or add to placed counters, plus ways to spread or copy them, turn one end-step trigger into an overwhelming threat that gains trample (Corpsejack Menace, Kami of Whispered Hopes, Kalonian Hydra) - Life-to-power payoffs: Creatures that grow or draw cards whenever life is gained or counters land convert the lifegain stream into board presence and card advantage (Nykthos Paragon, Exemplar of Light, Willowdusk, Essence Seer) - Life loss as a resource: Draw engines, painful mana and life-cost removal deliberately drain life to enable Betor's reanimation, alongside self-mill and other recursion (Phyrexian Arena, Darkstar Augur, Buried Alive) - Drain finishers: Engines that turn each life gain into opponent life loss, plus big X drains, close games without combat (Enduring Tenacity, Vizkopa Guildmage, Debt to the Deathless) - Protection and lockout: Hexproof granters, equipment and effects that stop opponents casting spells on the deck's turn protect the commander and its towering threat (Shalai, Voice of Plenty, Privileged Position, Dragonlord Dromoka)
