Zaxara, the Exemplary
Zaxara, the Exemplary Commander Deck
Zaxara turns every X spell into two threats: the spell itself and a Hydra token carrying X +1/+1 counters. The deck is a pile of X-cost Hydras and X spells fed by heavy ramp and X-only mana. Counter doublers and adders multiply both the Hydras and Zaxara's tokens into lethal trampling and unblockable attackers. Unbound Flourishing doubles X on permanent spells, which makes both the creature and Zaxara's token bigger. It also copies X instants and sorceries. How it wins: It grows an overwhelming board of huge Hydras with trample or evasion and swings through, with X-powered drain finishers and a Simic Ascendancy counter win as backups. Key roles: - X-spell engine: Zaxara rewards casting anything with X, so the deck is full of X-cost Hydras and utility spells. Many of these do double duty, like card draw, tutoring the top of the library, or removal, while each one also makes a Hydra token. (Genesis Hydra, Hydroid Krasis, Voracious Hydra) - X-mana acceleration: Mana that scales or is restricted to X costs, plus land ramp, pushes X values high early and late. Big Hydras then feed Selvala's mana, which loops into bigger X. (Elementalist's Palette, Nexos, Selvala, Heart of the Wilds) - Counter multiplication: Doublers and adders stack on every Hydra entering with counters and on Zaxara's tokens. Unbound Flourishing doubles X itself, so modest spells become enormous. (Doubling Season, Unbound Flourishing, Kalonian Hydra) - Hydra value and resilience: Death triggers turn removal into cards, treasure, snakes or redistributed counters, and The Ozolith saves counters for reuse. Gargos makes Hydras cheaper and fights whenever a creature of theirs is targeted. (Lifeblood Hydra, Vastwood Hydra, The Ozolith) - Counters into cards: Placing counters or landing big creatures draws cards to refuel the stream of X spells. Terrasymbiosis only pays out once per turn. (Garruk's Uprising, Terrasymbiosis, Inspiring Call) - Evasion and alternate finishers: Unblockability and trample push the oversized board through. X drain spells end games directly, and Simic Ascendancy builds growth counters toward an upkeep win. (Herald of Secret Streams, Exsanguinate, Simic Ascendancy)
