Zaxara, the Exemplary
Zaxara, the Exemplary Commander Deck
Zaxara turns every X spell into two threats: the spell itself plus a Hydra token carrying X +1/+1 counters, so the deck is stuffed with X-cost hydras, X spells and X-cost removal and finishers. Ramp, mana doublers and Zaxara's own two-mana tap pump X as high as possible. Counter-doubling enchantments and creatures then inflate both the hydras and the Zaxara tokens, and token doubling and X doubling multiply the payoff of each cast. How it wins: It overwhelms the table with oversized hydras and Hydra tokens made evasive with trample or unblockability, or finishes with a huge X spell such as Exsanguinate, Walking Ballista or Villainous Wealth, with Simic Ascendancy as an alternate counter-fueled win. Key roles: - X spell engine: Creature and noncreature spells with X in their cost each give Zaxara a Hydra token while also doing their own job, so every cast adds two bodies or a body plus an effect (Genesis Hydra, Hydroid Krasis, Goldvein Hydra). - Mana for big X: Land ramp, mana rocks, land auras and power-scaled mana creatures, plus a palette that stores mana only for X costs, let X climb well past normal mana (Elementalist's Palette, Selvala, Heart of the Wilds, Kami of Whispered Hopes). - Counter and token multipliers: Effects that add extra or double +1/+1 counters, double tokens, or double X itself make every Zaxara trigger and every hydra far larger, and copy X instants and sorceries (Unbound Flourishing, Adrix and Nev, Twincasters, Corpsejack Menace). - Power-based card flow: Big creatures and counter-bearing creatures fuel draw effects that scale with power or count creatures with counters, keeping the hand full of X spells (Rishkar's Expertise, Garruk's Uprising, Inspiring Call). - Evasion and pushing damage: Trample, unblockability for creatures with counters and blocking restrictions turn the hydra board into lethal combat damage (Herald of Secret Streams, Champion of Lambholt, Return of the Wildspeaker). - Alternate finishers: Scalable drain, damage and spell theft, plus a growth-counter win enchantment, close games without combat (Exsanguinate, Walking Ballista, Simic Ascendancy).
