Karumonix, the Rat King
Karumonix, the Rat King Commander Deck
Karumonix turns a mono-black Rat tribal swarm into a poison deck: every other Rat gets toxic 1, so each Rat that connects adds a poison counter on top of its damage. The deck floods the board with cheap Rats and Rat tokens, then makes them evasive, pumped or deathtouch-armed so they get through. Proliferate effects and incidental poison sources push opponents toward ten counters faster than combat alone could. How it wins: The deck wins mainly by poison, landing a wide, evasive wave of toxic and infect Rats and then proliferating to finish, with plain combat damage from huge Rat lords and Grave Pact lockdowns as backup. Key roles: - Rat swarm generation: Recurring and explosive token makers multiply the number of toxic bodies, so each attack spreads more poison and feeds the Rat-count payoffs (Lord Skitter, Sewer King, Marrow-Gnawer, Pack Rat). - Evasion and anthems: Effects that grant fear, menace or deathtouch, or scale with the number of Rats, let a board of small toxic creatures connect en masse or become lethal through damage alone (Piper of the Swarm, Ashcoat of the Shadow Swarm, Cover of Darkness). - Poison and proliferate finishers: Infect creatures, poison-adding spells and proliferate effects turn a few connected hits into a lethal poison total, and corrupted mana rewards getting opponents to three counters (Vraska, Betrayal's Sting, Grim Affliction, Glistening Sphere). - Rat card advantage and tutoring: Karumonix's enter trigger, repeatable Rat searches and tribal draw engines keep the hand stocked with creatures, while cost reducers let several be cast per turn (Ratcatcher, Vanquisher's Banner, Herald's Horn). - Sacrifice value and one-sided board control: Expendable Rats become fuel for card draw and for opponents' sacrifices, and tribal sweepers or Crypt Rats clear blockers while the Rats survive or rebuild (Grave Pact, Skullclamp, Kindred Dominance). - Graveyard recursion: Rats return from the graveyard to hand or straight back into combat, so the swarm persists through removal and wraths (Ashcoat of the Shadow Swarm, Persistent Marshstalker, Necrogen Communion).
