Y'shtola leads an Esper spellslinger deck. It casts a stream of noncreature spells, mostly at mana value 3 or more so each one triggers her 2 damage to every opponent plus 2 life. A cast of legendary Final Fantasy wizards adds their own pings, tokens and card draw on every noncreature spell. Those repeated drains also turn on Y'shtola's end-step draw whenever someone has lost 4 or more life. Cost reducers, free-cast and graveyard-recast engines let the deck chain several of those spells in one turn. How it wins: Repeated noncreature-spell drains from Y'shtola and the other casting-trigger creatures wear down every opponent, and big swings like Exsanguinate, Bolas's Citadel and recast spells from the graveyard finish them off. Key roles: - Cast-trigger drain: Creatures and tokens that deal damage to each opponent whenever a noncreature spell is cast, stacking on top of Y'shtola's own trigger. The equipment that doubles a wizard's triggers can make her fire twice per spell. (Emet-Selch of the Third Seat, Torrential Gearhulk, Wisdom of Ages) - Ability-granting payoffs for Y'shtola: Auras and equipment give her lifelink or deathtouch, which apply to her own noncreature damage. Each trigger then gains extra life or kills any creature it hits. (Circle of Power, Dancer's Chakrams) - Spell-fueled board and card advantage: Wizards that turn every noncreature cast into bird or hero tokens, cards or counters. Combined with Y'shtola's end-step draw, they keep the hand full and build a defensive board.
