Marchesa, the Black Rose
Marchesa, the Black Rose Commander Deck
Marchesa turns every creature with a +1/+1 counter into a recurring sacrifice resource. Dethrone attacks, counter-placing enchantments, modular-style artifacts and enters-with-counter effects mark creatures. Free sacrifice outlets then cash them in, and Marchesa brings each one back at the next end step to be fed through again. Every death pays out in drain, damage, cards or mana, so the deck grinds value while its aristocrat payoffs chip opponents down. How it wins: Repeatedly sacrificing countered creatures that Marchesa returns, while death-trigger drainers, Goblin Bombardment and Syr Konrad, the Grim pile up damage across the table until opponents die, with combat from dethrone-grown attackers finishing weakened players. Key roles: - Counter placement: Puts +1/+1 counters on creatures so Marchesa's return clause applies, whether through paid life, upkeep triggers, graveyard-leave triggers, chosen-type entry counters or dethrone attacks (Unspeakable Symbol, Metallic Mimic, Feast on the Fallen). - Self-countered and undying bodies: Cheap creatures that enter or return with counters already on them, or pass counters along when they die, making ideal fodder that comes back again and again (Arcbound Worker, Iron Apprentice, Geralf's Messenger). - Free sacrifice outlets: Repeatable ways to kill own creatures on demand for mana, scry, damage or mill, turning each Marchesa return into a fresh trigger, with mana-producing outlets fueling further loops (Ashnod's Altar, Goblin Bombardment, Viscera Seer). - Death-trigger drain payoffs: Creatures and enchantments that make opponents lose life or take damage whenever creatures die or are sacrificed, the main closing engine (Blood Artist, Zulaport Cutthroat, Mayhem Devil). - Death-fueled card advantage: Cards that draw whenever creatures die or as part of a sacrifice cost, keeping the hand full during loops (Skullclamp, Grim Haruspex, Midnight Reaper). - Recursion, resets and protection: Graveyard returns, temporary undying and phasing safeguard the engine. Sweepers clear the board while countered creatures return under Marchesa and Dictate of Erebos punishes opponents for each loss (Victimize, Feign Death, Blasphemous Act).
