Queza, Augur of Agonies
Queza, Augur of Agonies Commander Deck
Queza turns every card drawn into a 1-life drain, so this Esper control deck wins by drawing heavily while it controls the board with counterspells, spot removal and sweepers. Cantrips, burst draw spells, X-draw spells and creatures that replace themselves feed the drain. Lifegain then loops back into more cards through Niv-Mizzet, Ghost Counsel, which pays that life to draw that many cards. Token makers and passive upkeep drains add pressure from a second direction and keep the table's life totals falling. How it wins: Repeated Queza drains from mass card draw, ideally a huge Mathemagics or an endless Niv-Mizzet lifegain-to-draw loop, push opponents' life totals to zero, backed by upkeep drains and flying token armies. Key roles: - Draw-to-drain fuel: Cheap cantrips and burst draw make each turn several Queza triggers, and X spells can draw enough cards to drain a whole table at once (Mathemagics, Brainsurge, Occult Epiphany). - Lifegain-draw loop: Queza's lifegain makes Niv-Mizzet, Ghost Counsel pay life to draw more, which triggers Queza again. A second drain-on-draw source and lifegain-triggered Angels make each loop stronger (Niv-Mizzet, Ghost Counsel, Starving Revenant, Ob Nixilis, the Ascended). - Control suite: Counterspells, flash interaction and cheap exile effects protect the engine and stop threats, and several of these spells also draw cards (Counterspell, Ertai Resurrected, Reprieve). - Sweepers with built-in recovery: Board wipes reset combat, and several of them leave tokens or a large body behind for this deck alone. Propaganda slows attacks on the player while the drain works (Martial Coup, White Sun's Twilight, Sunfall). - Token pressure and payoffs: Token makers build fliers that finish games. Token-synergy cards turn each new token into extra cards or extra drain (Shark Typhoon, Staff of the Storyteller, Mirkwood Bats). - Passive upkeep drains: Recurring life loss and monarch draws keep opponents' life falling between big draw turns, and the monarch adds a free card each turn (Court of Ambition, Tithing Blade, Warlock Class).
