Brokkos, Apex of Forever
Brokkos, Apex of Forever Commander Deck
Brokkos, Apex of Forever leads a mutate deck that stacks mutate creatures onto evasive, hexproof, or infect bases, so one big creature carries every ability in the pile. Each mutate brings a trigger that removes threats, draws cards, makes opponents discard, or puts permanents onto the battlefield. Brokkos itself is a 6/6 trampler that can be cast again from the graveyard by its mutate cost, so it rebuilds the stack after removal. Casting creature spells also feeds draw engines and cost reduction, while ramp gets the expensive mutate costs online early. How it wins: The deck builds one huge trampling or evasive mutated creature and attacks with it, often adding infect so poison counters can end games, while drain and repeatable mutate triggers clear blockers and grind opponents down. Key roles: - Mutate bases: cheap non-Human creatures that give the stack a safe or dangerous body, like hexproof against removal, unblockability, flying, or infect, so mutating onto them turns the whole pile into a protected or poisonous threat (Slippery Bogle, Cold-Eyed Selkie, Mysterious Egg). - Mutate trigger value: creatures whose mutate triggers destroy permanents, force sacrifices, bounce or steal, make opponents discard, or flip permanents onto the battlefield, so every mutate is also a spell (Chittering Harvester, Dirge Bat, Auspicious Starrix). - Infect and poison subtheme: infect creatures and an aura that grants infect turn a large mutated stack into a fast poison kill, helped by spells that hand out poison counters and proliferate (Corrupted Conscience, Blight Mamba, Viral Drake). - Creature-cast engines: payoffs that draw cards, filter, or lower costs whenever a creature spell is cast, and mutate spells in particular, keeping the stack growing (Pollywog Symbiote, Beast Whisperer, Lifecrafter's Bestiary). - Targeting payoffs: since mutate targets a creature already in play, effects that reward targeting a creature turn each mutate into extra cards or copied creatures (Vesuvan Duplimancy, Season of Growth, Essence Symbiote). - Recursion and resilience: Brokkos casting itself from the graveyard, cards that return mutate creatures or permanents to hand, plus haste and hexproof equipment, let the deck rebuild a stack after it is answered (Otrimi, the Ever-Playful, Boneyard Lurker, Swiftfoot Boots).
