Toph, the First Metalbender
Toph, the First Metalbender Commander Deck
Toph turns every nontoken artifact into a land, so the deck packs cheap artifacts, Food tokens and mana rocks that double as lands and as bodies for her end-step earthbend. Repeated earthbend effects from Toph, the other Toph cards, Bumi, Kyoshi and Ba Sing Se animate lands and artifacts into hasty +1/+1-countered threats. Counter multipliers and proliferate grow them, and landfall payoffs reward the steady stream of new lands from fetch effects and artifact drops. Ashaya, which turns creatures into lands, and Mycosynth Lattice, which turns everything into artifacts, blur the lines further, so nearly every permanent can be earthbent, tapped for mana or untapped. How it wins: It swarms with oversized animated land and artifact creatures, pumped by counter doublers and team-wide anthems, and can turn Bumi's combat trigger into infinite untaps and combat phases with Ashaya, or with Toph plus Liquimetal Torque. Key roles: - Artifact lands: Cheap nontoken artifacts become lands under Toph, the First Metalbender, which gives landfall triggers, earthbend targets and fuel for sacrifice payoffs, all of which pay off when cracked for value (Mind Stone, Heaped Harvest, Weapons Manufacturing). - Earthbend engine: Repeated triggers animate lands into hasty countered attackers, and doubling legendary-creature triggers multiplies them (Toph, Greatest Earthbender, Avatar Kyoshi, Earthbender, Annie Joins Up). - Counter amplification: Hydras, doublers and proliferate inflate every earthbend and landfall counter, and The Ozolith keeps counters when animated lands die (Innkeeper's Talent, Benevolent Hydra, Evolution Sage). - Landfall value: Land-fetching spells and extra land drops trigger damage, tokens, counters and experience (Tannuk, Memorial Ensign, Scute Swarm, Planar Engineering). - Type-blending combos: Making creatures lands or permanents artifacts lets Bumi's untap-all-lands trigger untap everything for infinite mana and combats (Bumi, Unleashed, Ashaya, Soul of the Wild, Liquimetal Torque). - Finishers and lockout: Team-wide pumps, evasion and protection close games, and The Stasis Coffin can protect the player indefinitely once its own land status lets it be untapped (Titanic Ultimatum, Craterclaw Colossus, The Stasis Coffin).
