Tergrid, God of Fright // Tergrid's Lantern
Tergrid, God of Fright // Tergrid's Lantern Commander Deck
Tergrid turns forced sacrifice and discard into a steal engine: every edict, symmetrical sacrifice effect and discard trigger lets her take the opponents' lost nontoken permanents and permanent cards from their graveyards onto the battlefield. Upkeep lock pieces like Smokestack, Braids, Bottomless Pit and Necrogen Mists, together with repeatable punisher effects, keep the triggers flowing. Mono-black Swamp and devotion mana (Cabal Coffers, Crypt Ghast, Nykthos, rituals) powers big plays like X-cost Torment of Hailfire. Discard payoffs turn emptied hands into cards, tokens and life loss. How it wins: It grinds opponents out of resources while building an army from their stolen permanents, then finishes with life drain from punisher effects, Gray Merchant, Tinybones on empty hands, Bolas's Citadel, or a huge Torment of Hailfire. Key roles: - Edicts and symmetrical sacrifice: Creature-entry triggers, instant and sorcery edicts, and mass sacrifice spells force opponents to give up permanents for Tergrid to claim, while the deck's own fodder makes the symmetrical ones lopsided (Fleshbag Marauder, Plaguecrafter, Grave Pact). - Recurring upkeep locks: Each-turn sacrifice and discard effects strip opponents' boards and hands every upkeep, feeding Tergrid repeatedly and grinding opponents into a soft lock (Smokestack, Braids, Cabal Minion, Bottomless Pit). - Discard pressure and hand denial: Entry triggers, spells and static punishers empty opponents' hands, turning discarded creatures and permanents into free cards for Tergrid (Necrogen Mists, Oppression, Burglar Rat). - Discard payoffs: Cards that reward every opponent discard with life loss, card draw, tokens or mana, and that punish players left hellbent (Liliana's Caress, Waste Not, Tinybones, Trinket Thief). - Punisher choices and drain finishers: Effects that let opponents choose between losing life and feeding Tergrid, plus devotion-based drains, close out games (Torment of Hailfire, Painful Quandary, Gray Merchant of Asphodel). - Mono-black mana explosion: Swamp-count and devotion lands, Crypt Ghast and rituals produce big bursts of mana to fuel X spells and Lantern untaps, with Urborg turning every land into a Swamp (Cabal Coffers, Crypt Ghast, Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx).
