The deck is a toughness-matters creature deck built around Doran, Besieged by Time. Doran discounts every creature whose toughness exceeds its power, and pumps each attacker or blocker by the gap between power and toughness. It pairs Doran with several "assign damage equal to toughness" effects, so walls, defenders and Treefolk with tiny power and huge toughness become heavy hitters. Cheap high-toughness creatures double as ramp and card draw, and evasion and mass pumps turn the board into lethal attacks. How it wins: It attacks with a wide board of high-toughness creatures that deal damage by toughness, pumped further by Doran's attack trigger, given trample and mass buffs to push through blockers, with Betor's toughness drain and Tree of Perdition's life swap as alternate closers. Key roles: - Toughness as damage: These cards make every creature deal combat damage equal to its toughness. Combined with Doran's +X/+X on attack, even 0-power walls become real threats, and some let defenders attack. (Doran, the Siege Tower, Assault Formation, Felothar the Steadfast) - Big-butt bodies and Treefolk: These creatures have low power and high toughness, so they get cheaper through Doran and Treefolk discounts. Cheap ones also tutor more Treefolk, and a few count Forests and Treefolk to grow. (Treefolk Harbinger, Bosk Banneret, Dauntless Dourbark) - Toughness-fueled ramp and value: These mana and draw engines scale with high toughness or with casting creatures. They keep the hand full and pull lands into play off each toughness-skewed creature that enters. (Arbor Adherent, Fecund Greenshell, Beast Whisperer) - Blight and counter synergy: These creatures enter with or place -1/-1 counters. Shrinking power while keeping toughness high widens Doran's gap, and some spend counters for cards or reanimation. (Sinister Gnarlbark, Blighted Blackthorn, Reaping Willow) - Overrun finishers: Trample, mass pumps, haste and protection on the swing turn convert a wide wall board into a lethal alpha strike. (Garruk's Uprising, Overrun, Crashing Drawbridge) - Alternate toughness closers: These cards win through total or raw toughness without connecting in combat, by halving opponents' life or swapping life totals. (Betor, Kin to All, Tree of Perdition, Baldin, Century Herdmaster)
