Tahngarth, First Mate Commander Deck
Tahngarth Voltron: pile Auras and Equipment onto the commander, a 5/5 that can't be blocked by more than one creature, and swing for commander damage. Every opponent attack is turned into extra Tahngarth attacks. Once Tahngarth has attacked and is tapped, any opponent who attacks may be handed control of it until end of combat, and it then attacks a player or planeswalker that opponent is attacking, with all its attachments still on. A forced-attack package (goad, "attack each combat" effects) makes opponents swing every turn, so a single loaded Tahngarth can hit several times per round. Each hit adds commander damage and triggers its card-draw and Treasure attachments. How it wins: A heavily suited-up Tahngarth, boosted by double strike, damage doubling and evasion, deals 21 commander damage to each opponent through its own attacks and the borrowed attacks during opponents' combats. Key roles: - Forced attacks: These pieces make opponents attack every combat, which keeps re-triggering Tahngarth's borrowed attacks and drives opponents' creatures into each other rather than the pilot (Grand Melee, Fumiko the Lowblood, Disrupt Decorum). - Damage multipliers: Double strike, power doubling and damage doubling turn one connection into lethal commander damage, often within a turn or two (The Sound of Drums, Fireshrieker, Temur Battle Rage). - Evasion and stat Auras: Menace and trample stack with Tahngarth's one-blocker limit to make it effectively unblockable while adding power. A suspect-and-menace subtheme also generates Treasure on attack (Rancor, Gimli's Axe, J. Jonah Jameson). - Hit-trigger value: Attachments that draw cards, make Treasure or fetch lands whenever the equipped creature connects keep the hand full, and they fire during opponents' turns too (Snake Umbra, Sticky Fingers, Hunter's Insight). - Protection and resilience: Umbra armor, hexproof Auras and cheap hexproof instants keep the investment safe from removal, since losing the carrier costs a whole turn of attachments (Boar Umbra, Alpha Authority, Vines of Vastwood). - Modification payoffs: These cards reward stacking Auras and Equipment with extra bodies, +1/+1 counters and card draw, so the Voltron pieces snowball (Chishiro, the Shattered Blade, Concord with the Kami).
