Kaalia of the Vast
Kaalia of the Vast Commander Deck
Kaalia of the Vast is a flying attacker. Each time she attacks an opponent, she cheats an Angel, Demon or Dragon from hand onto the battlefield tapped and attacking, skipping its mana cost. The deck fills that pipeline with expensive flyers whose attack and enters triggers fire for free: Drakuseth's damage, Arbiter of Woe's drain, and Hellkite Tyrant stealing artifacts. Haste and protection equipment keep Kaalia alive and swinging, while sweepers that spare the flyers or reset the board keep the skies clear. How it wins: Kaalia drops a large evasive Angel, Demon or Dragon into every attack, and the deck swings with these flyers, backed by attack-trigger damage, anthem and double-strike effects and extra combats, until opponents fall to combat damage. Key roles: - Cheat payload: High-cost Angels, Demons and Dragons that Kaalia puts into play attacking, each adding value or damage as it arrives, so it's worth holding them in hand rather than casting them (Drakuseth, Maw of Flames, Hellkite Tyrant, Arbiter of Woe). - Commander enablers: Equipment gives Kaalia haste, hexproof or unblockability so she can attack the turn she lands and survive to attack again, and protection instants shield the board through a key combat (Swiftfoot Boots, Whispersilk Cloak, Flare of Fortitude). - Combat amplifiers: Team-wide flying, lifelink, first strike, anthems, double strike and an extra combat turn a single cheated flyer into a lethal air force (Victory's Herald, Angel of Invention, Response // Resolution). - One-sided board control: Sweepers that spare Dragons or clear the way before flyers come back, plus spot removal, break up opposing defenses (Desolation of Smaug, Piru, the Volatile, Avatar's Wrath). - Alternate deployment: For games where Kaalia can't connect, cost reducers, a Dragon-fetching quest, a Dragon-making saga and graveyard reanimation put the big threats into play anyway (Last Light of Durin's Day, Bontu's Monument, Valgavoth's Faithful). - Artifact subtheme: Treasures, equipment and mana rocks power Imskir's affinity and card draw, and add to Hellkite Tyrant's stolen artifact count toward its twenty-artifact alternate win (Imskir Iron-Eater, Hellkite Tyrant, The Misty Mountains Cold).
