Taniwha
Taniwha Commander Deck
Taniwha's trigger runs on a two-turn tide. On turns it is phased in, its upkeep trigger phases out every land, so the deck spends mana in response, floats it into flash spells and upkeep tricks, and leans on mana rocks, mana creatures, treasures and other nonland sources. On alternate turns Taniwha phases out during the untap step, the trigger never happens, and the lands stay for a normal main-phase turn, where the deck develops boards and casts its biggest sorcery-speed spells. The weird spin is building a whole phasing deck around that rhythm: cards that phase its own permanents or opponents' threats in and out, untap-step and upkeep payoffs, and effects that make the vanishing lands a feature, such as dodging sorcery-speed removal or reusing lands that come back fresh. The deck avoids mass land denial, infinite combos and fast tutor chains, keeping the strangeness casual for bracket two. How it wins: The deck swings with a 7/7 trampling Taniwha on its in-phase turns and flashes in large blue threats on the off-beat, overwhelming opponents who can never pin down which of its permanents actually exist. Key roles: - Nonland mana base: mana rocks, mana creatures and treasure makers keep mana available on the turns Taniwha strips away the lands, so it can still cast spells and hold up interaction. (Taniwha) - Instant-speed play: flash creatures, instants and spells cast in response to the upkeep trigger turn the land-less turns into an end-of-turn, draw-go game built on mana floated from lands tapped before they vanish. - Phasing toolbox: effects that phase out its own permanents for protection or phase out opponents' creatures and blockers lean into the commander's mechanic as both defense and tempo. - Rhythm payoffs: cards that reward upkeep or untap-step timing, extra untaps, or permanents leaving and returning get value from the alternating lands-on, lands-off cadence. - Big blue finishers: large evasive or trampling creatures and sea monsters back Taniwha up as the beats, cast on the turns lands are present or flashed in on the others.
