The deck revolves around generating repeated life gain triggers to rapidly stack +1/+1 counters on Karlov of the Ghost Council, using him as both a growing threat and a repeatable exile engine that removes six counters to eliminate creatures. Passive life drain effects — draining opponents each upkeep or whenever they cast spells — steadily pad your life total while pressuring opponents, with Aetherflux Reservoir serving as an alternate win condition that converts accumulated life into lethal damage. Felidar Sovereign provides a secondary win condition, rewarding the deck's natural tendency to maintain a very high life total, while board wipes and enchantment-based removal handle threats that Karlov can't exile alone.
